Zsh Zsh Proche of Glamour Salon Is Changing The Natural Hair Community By Breaking The Hair Bondage Narrative

As an advocate for Women in Entrepneurship, I get excited every time I find a hidden gem. Imagine my surprise when I found a hidden gem right in my city!

For women like myself, growing up a lot of our representation was tied into our hair. Especially in the city of Detroit, where our hair shows are some of the highest rated in the nation.  Our hair was (and sometimes still is) permed, primped and pressed. Or as the older generation says it, fried, dyed and laid to the side. Love, Peace and Hair Grease.

I think you get it.

For Detroit's natural hairstylist Zsh Zsh Proche, her natural hair journey began 10 years ago! Not only was she encouraged to help women feel beautiful, she was determined to educate women of color on the maintenance of their luscious locs!

Zsh Zsh hopped into the Glamour Salon 9 years ago and has no plans on slowing down! Showcasing her natural hair talents all over the Michigan, she hopes to continue to spread knowledge and haircare for the community!

Being a hair stylist is more than just about hair. It is about making personal connections with their clients. By taking the time out to find what really helps with their hair and teaching them to maintain it on a daily basis, Zsh Zsh prides herself on an educated clientele. Helping them through life’s trial and celebrating life’s achievements. Knowing that to a lot of women, appearance is just as important as health, she knows that helping to care for their hair makes them feel just as good inside as it makes the look outside.

We caught up with the natural hair expert, in the midst of the holiday season! Hop in for some tricks and tips for your natural hair routine!

Q: As a hair care specialist, what are some suggestions that you would have for the natural hair care beginners?

A: I would say take the time to learn your hair. Not just what you heard works or what your parents have told you your entire life about your hair but take the time to get to know it for yourself. Learn how certain products react, how much time you’re willing to spend and what styles you like and dislike. There are so many varieties that there is a little bit of something for everyone.

Q: With the seasons changing, are their any changes that we should make to our hair care routines?

A: I don’t feel there is a need to change products because of the season change. However, I do recommend more hot oil treatments during the winter months. The key is really finding products that work well with your hair texture so that there isn’t a need to find change is based on circumstances.

Q: What made you hop into the Natural Hair Industry?

A: Actually, my daughter did! She was at a phase where she was growing her hair out and I cut my hair and joined her on her journey. I wanted to show her that she wasn’t alone and that we could do this together. I found my love and passion in this process and took the time out to educate myself on natural hair care!

Q: What do you say about the Natural Hair care that’s been taking over the industry!

A: We are no longer in hair bondage! We have gained back our hair freedom! The natural hair has long been a part of our culture, so it’s really nothing new. The only thing that has changed is that society is now more acceptable to our culture. Women love having the option of knowing that they can still live normal lives without the fear of being judged on their natural hair.

Q: What words of encouragement would you like to leave for our audience?

A: Believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone stop you from your dream and following your passion! Your dreams and your vision are yours alone, so don’t always expect people to understand!
